If you're not going to say anything, why should I?

Psht. Thought so.

You wanna know about me? You really wanna know?

Fine. But you're gonna have to be content to sort the truth out from the lies.

I was born in South Africa; Cape Town to be exact. My parents died before I can quite remember, though I have a few hazy memories of my mother taking me to a market or something when I was about three years of age. Most of my life in Cape Town was spent running from my Aunt Mary's house and living on the street by myself.

I was ten when I realized that there was a ship in the yard that was bound for a place called "America." I had never heard of it before and it sounded interesting, so I slipped aboard and found myself locked in before I knew what was going on. I wasn't too troubled- I had escaped and there was enough food for me to sneak while on board.

When we finally arrived in Staten Island, no one knew what to do with me because I only spoke Dutch and Afrikaans and had no idea that the two were separate languages, so I would slip from one into the other without noticing or caring. I was placed in an orphanage that doubled as a workhouse for children, which is where I learned English.

For eight years I was stuck there- an immigrant with no home, no money, and no name. Aunt Mary had called me Sarah Boardswith, which is what I suppose my given name was, but I despised her so that I longed for a different name and eventually gave myself one. How I ended up with the one I chose, I'm not sure, but I was happy that it gave me the nickname Terry, which was masculine enough to hide behind.

Did I mention I discovered I was not attracted to boys, but girls?

When I was eighteen, I got lost one night and found myself at a boxing match. I was somewhat afraid at first, but then I saw that the bigger boxer was actually taking a beating from the smaller one! Immediately I was drawn in, imagining myself as that scrawny boxer, defying the odds. I began to cheer so vigorously that some of the men, seeing only my male disguise, gave me boxing lessons. For years I worked myself up the boxing ladder, all under the pretense that I was a boy.

Inevitably, my secret was found out, and immediately I was scorned from the sport I'd grown to love. Right about then, the Depression hit, and poor people everywhere were suffering the greatest brunt of it. All of the unfairness of the world was coming to a head, and I could barely stand it.

That's when I met Archie....
